We traveled by bullet train, known as Shinkasen, from Toyko to Kyoto. We had reservations for 11:03am and we were told that the trains are very punctual so we knew that we had better get there plenty early.
Once we figured out where the train would arrive and which train car we were in, Don set out to find us some lunch. A friend, who has visited Japan before, told us to get a bento box to take on the train. A bento box is basically take out food in a box but the box was all wrapped up quite fancy.
This the side of our train, Hikari.
Looking down the length of our train.
If you have not figured out how far it is from Tokyo to Kyoto, it is 513km, by train. The train travels at speeds up to 300 km per hour (sometimes it goes much slower, especially when it is entering or leaving a station). The train did make several stops along the way. Let's see who can estimate the time that it took us to get to Kyoto from Tokyo...I will have a prize for the person who comes closest.
Once we arrived in Kyoto, we took a shuttle bus to our hotel, got checked in and then headed out for another adventure. We thought that we would walk to downtown and see the sites along the way.
A glass wall with water running down and a little garden in behind.
A crane sitting on a hedge right alongside the sidewalk
The Higashi-Honganji Temple in Kyoto
It is a beautiful structure!
Kyoto has a tower, too!
The crane got some dinner...but not by himself! A lady came by and fed the crane a delicious dinner.
A couple of cuties walking down the street!
A little canal along an old quiet street in Kyoto.
We went down this alley from the canal. There were little tiny restaurants that only held about 10 people at a time all along this alley.
When we came out of the alley, this is what we saw. It was so different from the quiet, little street that was only about 50 steps away! This is the new part of downtown Kyoto.
You know what this is!
These are cute, little donuts. I think they are too cute to eat!
We ended up having another long afternoon of walking but we got to see some of the sites of Kyoto. We get another full day tomorrow! I hope everyone is working hard...see you soon...love Mrs. Wright!
